Hell or Jahannam

Hell or Jahannam

In Islam, hell is the place of punishment for unbelievers and other evildoers. It occupies an important place in the Muslim imagination. It is often properly called Jahannam. The importance of hell in Islamic doctrine is that it is an essential element of the Day of Judgment, one of the six articles of faith (Allah, angels, books, prophets, the Day of Resurrection, and providence) "by which the Muslim faith is traditionally defined."

In mainstream Islam, the punishments and torments in hell vary depending on the physical, psychological, and spiritual sins of the condemned person. Its excruciating pains and horrors described in the Qur'an are often paralleled by the joys and delights of Paradise. It is generally believed by Muslims that imprisonment in Hell is temporary for Muslims but not for others. According to Qur'an-

"Surely the Day of Judgement has an appointed time. and when the sky shall be opened up and will become all doors. and the mountains will be set in motion and become a mirage. Surely Hell is an ambush, a resort for the rebellious. Therein they shall abide for ages, they shall taste in it no coolness, nor any pleasant drink. save boiling water and wash of the wounds; a befitting recompense for their deeds. For indeed they did not look forward to any reckoning, and roundly denied Our Signs as false. And everything We recorded in a Book. So taste (the fruit of your deeds). We shall only increase your torment." (Sura Naba:17-30)

The hell according to Qur'an-Hadith

Hell is the Arabic word. It is called Dojkh in Persian and Narak in Bengali. That is, hell is the place of punishment. In Islamic terminology, hell is the painful place to which sinners and infidels will be thrown for the final punishment after the reckoning of sins and merits on the Day of Judgment.

The number of hell is 7. There are -

i. Jahannam

ii. Laza

iii. Hutamah

iv. Sa’eer

v. Saqar

vi. Jahim

vii. Hibiya.

Allah says in the Qur'an, "Indeed, Hell awaits. As a haven for trespassers. There they will stay for ages. There they will find no coolness and no cold drinks. Rather, only without boiling water and pus.'(Surah Naba, verses 21-25) It is clear from these verses that hot water and pus will be given to the people of Hell.

Allah also says, 'For those who disbelieve, there is Hellfire. They will not be condemned to die and their punishment will not be reduced. This is how I reward every ungrateful person.' (Surah Fatir, verse 36) If someone kills someone, his punishment will be Hell.

Allah says in Surah Nisa, "Whoever kills a believer willfully, his consequence will be Hell. He will remain there. And Allah will be angry with him and curse him and prepare for him a great chastisement.' (Ayat 93)

The Prophet (PBUH) said, "The greatest punishment of Hell will be the fire and the fire of Hell will be 70 times hotter than the fire of this world." (Bukhari) Those who commit crimes in this world and the crimes that are forbidden in the light of the Qur'an and Hadith will be in Hell. Such as killing someone without any crime, adultery, consuming the wealth of orphans, living a luxurious life by earning interest and bribes, consuming government money, owning wealth through corruption, not paying zakat, destroying the rights of others, gambling, and being drunk with women, etc.

Allah says, "Those who unjustly eat the wealth of the orphans, let them fill their bellies with fire, soon these people will be burning in the fire of Hell." (Surah Nisa, verse 10)

"Undoubtedly, there will be a tree called Zakkum in Hell. That will be the food of the sinners there.' (Surah Ad-Dukhan, verses 43-44)

Allah also says, 'On that day you will see all the criminals in chains, their clothes will be as thick as tar, and the fire will cover their faces.' (Surah Ibrahim, verses 49-50) The criminals will cry in Hell and say, O Allah! Take us out. We will now do good deeds instead of what we used to do.

Then Allah will say, have I not given you long life in this world? If you want to be careful, no one could be careful there. (Surat al-Fatir, verse 37)

Ayesha (RA) used to cry remembering the fire of Hell and Umar (RA) used to faint while reciting the punishment of Hell while reciting the Qur'an. So we should all live by the rules of the Quran and Hadith and refrain from forbidden acts keeping in mind the fire and punishment of hell.
